When they arrived at The Palace Brady made a face at the entrance because Kevin knew one of the bouncers. He started to wonder how Kevin knew the bouncer, and if Kevin had gone there while they’d been married to meet other men. Though he didn’t mention any of this aloud, he turned his back on Kevin when they went inside and refused to look at him.

“What did I do now?” Kevin asked, when Arthur and Farman went to the bar to get them all drinks. Lucky followed them to the bar, with his eyes wide and his lips parted.

“Nothing,” Brady said. He wouldn’t look him in the eye.

“Well, I obviously did something, because you’re not speaking to me again,” Kevin said. “And I’d like to know what that is.”

This time Brady turned and looked at him. He took a quick breath and said, “You’re right. I’m tired of being mad at you. I know you can’t help who you are, and I’m tired of getting frustrated over it. I’m not mad, everything is okay, and we’re fine. I think my mother is right for once. It is better to be friends with an ex-husband instead of enemies. It makes life so much easier.” He really meant this. When he realized that all of his frustration toward Kevin was keeping him from having a good time that night, it all seemed so pointless. He wasn’t even married to him anymore.

“Does that mean you’ve forgiven me?” Kevin asked.

Brady wasn’t sure he understood the question. “In a way, I guess it does. It means I’ve given up on what I expected from you and I’ve come to accept you for who you are. And that’s not a bad thing, Kevin.”

“I’m not sure I like the sound of that,” Kevin said. “I know you too well. You’re up to something.”

Brady smiled. “I’m not up to anything. I haven’t been out like this in a long time and all I want to do is have a good time tonight. Besides, I think you have other issues besides how I feel tonight.” He looked to the right and gestured to Farman and Lucky on the dance floor. Evidently, they’d forgotten about getting drinks. “It looks as though our two new partners have found something in common.”
